MNA® Screening Process (MNA-SF®)

The Mini Nutrition Assessment®–Short Form (MNA®-SF) is a shortened form of the MNA® that provides an easy way to screen elderly patients (65 years old and older) for malnutrition in less than five minutes.  The shortened MNA® comprises six questions that were found to strongly correlate with the total MNA® and clinical judgment of nutritional status.

The MNA®-SF was developed and validated to provide a more efficient screening process.  The MNA®-SF retains the validity and accuracy of the full MNA®.Rubenstein LZ, Harker JO, Salva A, Guigoz Y, Vellas B. Screening for undernutrition in geriatric practice: developing the short-form mini-nutritional assessment (MNA-SF). The Two Step Process
MNA®-SF
  1. The MNA®-SF quickly screens subjects using six key questions and takes about three minutes. Those who score >12 out of a possible 14 points have satisfactory nutritional status and require no further screening.
Full MNA®
  1. The full MNA® must be completed if the MNA®-SF is positive for malnutrition risk (score <12 out of a possible 14 points).  The full MNA® takes about 10 to 15 minutes.Guigoz Y, Lauque S, Vellas BJ.   2. The additional twelve questions have a maximum possible score of 16. Combining the scores of the MNA®-SF and the remaining twelve questions gives the full MNA® score or Malnutrition Indicator Score. A total score of 17 – 23.5 indicates risk of malnutrition.  A score of < 17 indicates existing malnutrition (see Scoring section).
